Marangu Route is otherwise known as “Coca-cola” route. It is one of the oldest and most-established routes to find during Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing. Marangu approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the south-east. Hikers can avail hut accommodation in this route only.
Kilimanjaro Marangu Route is considered the easiest among all other routes. The ascent and descent will be from the same path. So the scenic view is little less as compared to other routes. A five to six days Kilimanjaro Climbing is recommended for this route.
Difficulty – Low
Distance – 72km/45miles
Duration – 6 Days
Success Rate – Low
Although some climbers like the idea of staying in the huts rather than camping, you need to remember that on the Marangu Route you will be sharing the hut with lots of other climbers in open dormitory accommodation. This makes the route a popular choice for budget operators that don’t have camping equipment. We only recommend choosing this route if you really don’t want to camp.
It’s actually considered difficult because of the speed by which you ascend. This is especially true on the 5 day itinerary where many people suffer from lack of acclimatization. The Marangu Route 6 Days option is easier, however, a good level of fitness is still required.
The total climbing distance for the Marangu Route is 70km or 43 miles.
Because it has one of the shortest itineraries on the mountain, the Marangu Route has the lowest summit success rates. The 5 day average success rate is under 50%! Here Marangu Route 6 Days summit success rate is over 85%!
The Marangu Route ascends through rainforest, moorlands and alpine areas before finishing in the glacial zone. Whilst the climb is very beautiful, this is the only route in which you descend back down the same trail.

Marangu route 6 days climb – The Marangu route is perhaps the easiest and most comfortable way to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. The route is popular, well-developed and the climb is constant and moderate. The approach to the summit is the exception, however, and demands more from the body and mind. Accommodation is in dormitory style rustic huts that are more comfortable and sheltered from the elements on cold nights. This is the only route on the mountain where you do not sleep in tents.
