Covering an area of 4,471 sq km (1,727 sq miles), Katavi National Park is the third largest park in Tanzania.The remote location of the park offers dramatic scenery is as varied as it is pristine. Katavi’s true wilderness provides the intrepid travellers a thrilling taste of Africa. The park is tricky to access and pretty costly to visit. For many, the park is an untouched, unique experience, and absolutely worth visiting. Katavi is one of the best parks in Africa and a perfect destination to set up camps in the heart of the wilderness. Walking safaris, game drives, bird watching safaris, camping and picnicking are the activities visitors can enjoy in Katavi.

Wildlife

Katavi’s wilderness harbours a good concentration of animals such as elephants, buffalos, zebras, Hartebeests, giraffes, waterbucks, topis, impalas and wild dogs. Spotted hyenas are frequently seen while leopards are rare to see.

Katavi National Park is at its best in the dry season, when the plains fill with thousands of animals coming for miles to water sources. The surrounding areas of Katuma and Kapapa rivers present the best view with the gathering of wildlife and crocodiles lying in the mud holes.

Birdlife

Katavi National Park hosts a wide variety of colourful birds. The 400 different species of birds include a large flock of open-billed, saddlebilled storks, spoonbills, crested cranes, pink-backed pelicans, and African golden orioles, paradise fly-catchers, pennant-winged nightjars, Raptors and many more.

Best Time To Visit

Katavi National Park experiences the peak wildlife view during the dry season (May to October). This is the time when the vegetation becomes thinner and wild animals gather around the Katuma River to quench their thirst.

The wet season (November to April) the wildlife viewing becomes a challenge due to the thick bush.

How To Go

Your entry point to the land is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), about 46km/29mi from Arusha, or Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam.

The best way to get to Katavi is by a flight from Arusha.

Normally, your tour operator will pick you up from the airport and make further arrangements.
