Covering an area of 330 sq Km, Lake Manyara National Park lies in the shadow o the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. The park is a gem of East Africa for its scenic beauty.
The game viewing is not significant as compared to the neighbouring Tarangire and Ngorongoro, but for some unique reasons, the park draws the attention of millions of visitors.
The unique tree-climbing lions and the breath-taking scenery of the soda-ash lake covered with the graceful pink flamingos enhance the beauty of the lovely scenic park.
The wildlife viewing in Lake Manyara National Park is not as high as the surrounded neighbouring parks. But the park is heaven for some unique species.
The main attraction is the tree-climbing lions. The lions are habituated in climbing trees and viewing them relaxing on treetops is an incredible sight for the visitors.
The varied landscape also supports a huge number of elephants, wildebeest, buffalo, hippo, flamingo, zebra, warthog, waterbuck, giraffe, dik-dik and impala. Many baboons are also home to the park.
The birdlife of Lake Manyara National Park is exceptional. The Lake is a dwelling place for huge flocks of pelicans and pink-colored flamingos. The Lake also feeds egrets, stilts erons, spoonbills, stalks, crowned eagles, crested guinea fowl and the silvery cheeked hornbills.
Lake Manyara National Park is good to visit all around the year. The Dry season (June to October) offers the best view of wildlife when the vegetation becomes thinner and wild animals concentrate around the water sources to drink water.
The Wet season (November to May) is also good when the vegetation is lush and waterfalls cascade down the escarpment.
Your entry point to the land is Kilimanjaro International Airport if you land in Arusha and Julius Nyerere International Airport if you land in Dar-Es –Saalam. From Arusha, it will take only one and a half hours to reach the park.
As the park lies on the way between Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti, so travelling on a vehicle is a good option.
