Overview

With the huge, well-preserved wilderness areas and plains full with the game, the vast landscapes of Tanzania imitate a paradise for animal and bird lovers.

With the coming of rains, the landscapes display a remarkable palate of colors, from the fresh green grass to the red sands, to the billowing black afternoon thunderstorm clouds. Almost every night, the epic skies of Tanzania offer an amazing orange and red mix-colored sunset.

Birds are seen in full breeding regalia, and watching the long-tailed, testosterone-laden widows and black, red, and yellow bishops crazily displaying and chasing each other is a major highlight.

Tanzania holds the largest species lists of birds as compared to any other African country: over 1,100, of which over 800 species are resident, and nearly 200 are regular migrants. Migrants are good to view from Novem ber to April.

Some of the most graceful birds are:

  • Bar-tailed trogon

  • Brown-breasted barbet

  • Brown-necked parrot

  • Chestnut-fronted helmet-shrike

  • Golden-breasted starling

  • Green-headed oriole

  • Hartlaub's turaco

  • Lappet-faced vulture

  • Livingstone’s flycatcher

  • Long-tailed fiscal
